Small Living Room Design

Small Living Room DesignSmall Living Room Design

If you have a small living room, chances are you also have small furniture and fixtures to match. But this doesn’t have to be your final resort if you do have a small living room. Designing a small living room may be a challenge, but it is quite fulfilling when you see the finished product of a small living room design that fits your small space and lifestyle.

1. Use lighter shades of green, blue and yellow for your walls. These lighter colors or pastels help open up the room and give it a more airy feel. If you want a cozier feel to your living room, use darker shades of red, blue and brown.

2. To help further open up the room, use mirrors and glass table tops. Mirrors reflect light and give the illusion of a larger room. Make sure that the mirror reflects a view or an ornamental item to enhance the room. Use glass table tops to give your small living room an open feel, rather than using hard wood table that further shrinks the room.

3. Avoid using heavily printed upholstery for your seating and sofa. Use light, monochromatic colors that match. Avoid mix and match of colors as well, as it makes the room look smaller and tight.

4. Use light gauzy and filmy fabrics for your window treatments. These fabrics let natural light pass through and adds more personality to your living room. Do not overdo and avoid using heavily printed fabrics in a small living room design.

6. Choose the right-sized fixtures and accessories. Do not over-decorate your small living room; instead, look for items that will help make the room look bigger. Choose reflective items such as a good-sized glass-top coffee table, a wall mirror and a few functional items that add style and class to your small living room design.

Living Room full width landscapeFire As Focal Point In Modern Living Room

The living room is possibly the most used room of any house. It is where we watch TV, entertain friends, chat over coffee, and throw ourselves about while playing certain computer games. We use it as a play room, a study -with our laptops on knees, a dining room – with plates on knees a reading area and a napping area. It’s one of the few rooms where the entire family will all be in at one time, and possibly plus a few relatives too. It is a true multi-purpose space, and therefore need to be designed and decorated to reflect this.

Once you have considered what your needs are from the room, it’s a good idea to evaluate the space you have. Is it a large room? Is it square or L-shaped or long and thin? How many people are in your household and how often do visitors come round? Once these questions have been thoughts about the choice of suitable seating and space division can be resolved. If your room is long then it often works well to have the TV and sofas down one end and an office/reading area with bookshelves and lamps the other, this way dividing the room by the noise level of the activities. Sofa choice is very important, it is one of the key pieces of the room and will dictate the overall style, choose the style and material that suits you best, whether a modern L-shape in leather for some contemporary luxury, or monotone floral 3 seater for a modern twist on the traditional look.

Most living rooms work best if they have a focal point. An area that the furniture can be arranged around and something that people notice when they first walk into a room. Often this is the TV or the fireplace but could be wall art or some sculptural piece depending on what works best for your lifestyle. For a contemporary style consider setting the fireplace into the wall, or having a large hung canvas, that would stand out from the simple colour scheme a contemporary scheme would need.

With so many activities happening in the space it is vital to include suitable storage. Considering there needs to be places to store CDs, DVDs, books, magazines, toys, video games, consoles taking over a whole wall with floor to ceiling shelving units is a good idea. This will help to maintain the overall streamlined look of the room (as opposed to having stand-alone shelving units dotted here and there) as well as giving you lots of storage. Other possibilities are purposed designed bookcases/shelves for alcoves either side of the fire place or concealed storage areas in coffee tables and footstools, ensuring the room always looks clean and clutter free.

With so much traffic going through a living room, floor coverings need to be practical. Carpets feel warm and nice on your toes, but if you are a family with children that often eat in front of the TV an easy clean wood laminate may be the better choice. Stone gives a modern sophisticated appearance but can make a room feel cold and clinical so rugs would have to be included.

No matter what style of room you are aiming for its the finer details that give the space character, the textures of materials, the amount of cushions, the style of Table Lamps, the pattern of the wall paper will change whether it is super sleek and modern, or homely and cosy.

Decorating Ideas For Living Room

decorating-small-rooms-living-roomDecorating Ideas For Living Room

A new painting and some candles will make a world of difference to a bland and boring room. There are many stores that offer affordable decorating goodies. If you can't afford all the décor you want, buy it in small batches, and get your absolute must-have item first.

On thing not to neglect is putting art on your walls. This helps to bring the room together and adds a personal touch. You can choose painted canvases that can look great all on their own, or a framed print in shades that compliment your color scheme. Another great wall art idea is photographs. These can be family pictures or perhaps a black and white landscape or city sky line. The key here is not to overdo it.

Decorating Living Rooms

Formulate a Decorating Plan

Before you begin making changes to the interior of your house, you'll need to formulate a decorating plan. Perhaps you want to decorate a brand-new family room, or maybe you're redecorating a vacant bedroom now that a child is grown? Whatever the undertaking, the more attention spent on details, the better the results.

home-decorating-tipsTo prevent styles from clashing and lending some continuity to the design plan,
the living room and dining room feature the same wall color.

These days, you can choose from scores of materials, finishes, fabrics, and fixtures. Magazines, videos, books, and Internet articles (such as these) are unending sources for ideas. Neighbors and relatives, especially those who've been down this road before, might have helpful suggestions. And, should you want more guidance, you can turn to a design professional.

A first word of advice: Forging stylish rooms that resonate with character and comfort doesn't happen overnight. Ideally, we would all like to be somewhere else while work is under way, but that's not always possible.

Having a sensible plan for how to make do until the workers depart or the paint dries is the next best option. Try not to be tempted to take on the whole house and be done with it.

Tackling a single space at a time will better allow you to control the chaos, especially when young children are present. It's easier to empty one room of furniture -- and find berths in other rooms for misplaced beds and tables -- than three. Overhauling in small increments is also less time and money-consuming and more immediately gratifying.

On the practical side, when hiring professionals such as carpenters, electricians, and painters, it may be more economical to have them complete all the work within a specific time frame. One lengthy visit will entail more preparation and patience on your part, but savings could be substantial. Be sure to hire a reliable professional who will lay out your options and help you choose the smartest route.

Before the saws buzz and the dust flies, specify one room as your headquarters. A quiet nook where the family can muster for dinner or watch a movie lends stability. If the kitchen is involved, arrange a temporary galley with a fridge near the bathroom.

Use the bath sink for water, and be sure to include items you use everyday such as the microwave or coffeemaker. And generate some fun: Colorful paper plates and cups interject a festive picnic air and cut down on cleanup. To safeguard the kids, implement the out-of-sight, out-of-mind concept and devise a separate entrance that segregates the work zone from the rest of the house.

Be sure youngsters understand that this area and all its dangerous tools are off-limits.
